The value of hilsa has increased a lot in the Mawa fish market on the banks of Padma in Munshiganj. The supply of various types of fresh domestic fish has increased. The price of hilsa has gone up by Rs 100 per kg. However, the price of other fish has come down to Tk 10 to Tk 50.
As soon as the morning light came on, the Mawa warehouse at Padmapar in Munshiganj was jammed with buyers and sellers. Hankada sells all kinds of fresh fish including hilsa. The warehouses are full of silver hilsa. One banker of 30 fishing boats has sold hilsa worth Tk 6 lakh.
The value of hilsa has increased in this half century old market. Even if there is supply, the price goes up as there are more buyers. However, the price of other fish is low.
On an average, 20 metric tons of hilsa is being sold in the yard every day. The country’s first hilsa festival is being held at the port ground here on Friday. So happy fishermen.
In this two and a half hour market, 29 warehouses and 150 sellers have sold fish worth crores of rupees.
